Ismaïla Sarr’s Watford career
Ismaïla Sarr is one of several modern-day EPL stars whose career began in France. He made his debut for Metz, before enjoying two successful years playing for Rennes.
He scored 13 goals in 59 matches, a respectable tally. But, it was the glimpses of world-class potential that brought him to the attention of English scouts.
In 2019 he joined Watford for a £30 million transfer fee. Here he played for the majority of the season, scoring few, yet important goals along the way. His most famous performance to date happened against Liverpool, in Watford’s shocking 3-0 victory over the Reds in February 2020.
Ismaïla Sarr‘s stats and positioning
Sarr tends to play as a winger, capable of activating on either flank. He is also capable of taking on the role of striker, proficient in using his positioning skills, speed and strength to his advantage.
For Watford, a team that failed to avoid relegation this season, Ismailia Sarr was most effective when playing out wide. The Senegalese is terrific in opening play with for his team either through quick vertical passes, or accelerated runs forward.
This season, Sarr was involved in 28 games for Watford in the EPL. He scored 5 goals and assisted 4. His passing accuracy was beyond 80% even though many of these are vertical passes towards his fellow strikers. He’s averaged 1.7 dribbles per game and was chosen MotM on two occasions.
Why Sarr can play for a team like Liverpool
There’s no getting away from the fact that Liverpool is doing terrifically well. This success is largely owed to their clever transfer policy, having been able to spot genuine, undervalued talent when their rivals failed to do so.
Ismaila Sarr has many of the qualities that would suit Liverpool Furthermore, at 22 years old, his talented can be nurtured. The Senegalese is a pacey, intelligent winger that could suit Jurgen Klopp’s playing style.
Lastly, with Watford going down, it is expected that they will lose many of their top players. Sarr is unlikely to be an exception, although the experience of playing the very tough Championship may not be an altogether bad experience for the youngster.
