The Champions League results on Day 1 of the competition included comeback, surprises, and a few superclubs stretching their muscles. Here are the breakout stars from those games.
Andre Onana (Ajax Amsterdam) – 38 FootballCoin points
Ajax Amsterdam got bruised and battered by Liverpool, but dished a lot of it back. The Dutch side lost 1-0, it is true, but troubled the English champions throughout the game.
At the other end, Andre Onana saved six shots from an imminent goal. It took an own goal from teammate Nicolas Tagliafico to settle the matter. But, the fact remains that Onana is one of the best keepers in Europe.
Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) – 50.5 FotballCoin points
Andrew Robertson has more heavy-lifting to do in the absence of Virgil van Dijk in central defense. The Scottish player was a constant thorn in the side of Ajax, making 5 interceptions and crossing the ball 8 times. As things stand, few wing-backs in Europe are of greater caliber.
Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) – 44.9 FootballCoin points
Manchester United are, finally, back in the Champions League. To boot, the Red Devils looked impressively sharp against last year’s finalists, PSG. The victory was, once again, facilitated by Bruno Fernandes, United’s best transfer in recent years by far. He scored once, provided 7 crosses, and consistently accurate passes. United’s fortunes look to be on an upswing following two consecutive victories, in the EPL and UCL.
Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona) – 54.8 FootballCoin points
Lionel Messi, even if looking rather jaded, was the best player on the pitch in FC Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Ferncvaros. Messi accounted for one goal and one assist. He also created chances and helped set up his teammates for their own shots on goal. It was a regular day at the office for, arguably, the world’s best football player.
