Football across the world is currently in standby. And, while we are probably better off for it, we can only dream of the day, not long from now, when we can all inspect and dissect new Champions League results and fixtures. In the meantime, let’s check out some players, that, while not familiar to millions, were responsible for at least one shocking fantasy Champions League result in the 2019/20 season. Here’s how the became football cult heroes.
Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis
Dennis has been working hard at establishing himself since arriving at Club Brugge KV back in 2017. But, 2019 was the year that the Nigerian striker made a big impression on the football world stage. Not only did he earn a starting place in the Belgium team’s promising line-up, but Dennis also managed to score a memorable brace against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. A call-up to the Nigerian national team followed.
And, any worries that the player’s goals against Real may have been a one-off were made redundant by his subsequent performances. Dennis managed 92 points across 4 matches.
Simply put, his work has affected the UEFA Champions League results and group table which is now small feat for a 22 year-old. We are hoping that the best is yet to come from him and some of his other Brugge teammates with wonderkid potential written all over them. We are talking, of course, of players like David Okereke, Hans Vanaken and, the more experienced, Ruud Vormer.
Hwang Hee-Chan
Fellow FC Red Bull Salzburg forward, Erling Haaland, may have gotten most of the plaudits and a transfer to Borussia Dortmund. But, make no mistake about it, Hwang Hee-Chan is also making a reputation for himself as a tough and reliable striker. In the, often thrilling, world of fantasy Champions League this season he scored 2 and assisted 3 times, managing a total of 109.60 points across Pro contests.
Other noteworthy moments in the Champions League were the time that Hwang Hee Chan managed the rare dribble past the world’s top defender, Virgil van Dijk, as well as the fact that he became the second youngest South Korean to score in the competition.
Clearly, we are not the only ones paying attention to the exploits of the talented forward. A transfer to the Premier League beckons, with Wolverhampton the top challangers in the fight for the the South Korean’s signature.
Alan Patrick
A lot of the continued success of the Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk has been linked with their scouting and use of Brazilian players. Some, like Chelsea’s Willian, have gone on to play for world-class reputation clubs. Others, like Júnior Moraes have continued to carve their name into the history of South Eastern football and they remain the envy of all Western clubs.
Alan Patrick follows in that classic mold, having arrived in Ukraine via Santos back in 2011. While loaned during his first seasons as a consequence of the high level of competitiveness the squad was known for, Alan Patrick has been stepping into his own of late.
He has managed 114 points this season in fantasy football, scoring once and providing an assist. He’s also starred in most of his team’s domestic games. With two games to go, Shakhtar were favorites to qualify to the next round of the Champions League. Alan Patrick was one of the men most linked with that hypothetical triumph. A sharp change of fortunes has knocked the Ukrainian champions to third place in the table and they will continue in the Europa League. This may turn out to be another opportunity for Allan Patrick, the future great footballer, to show off his skill.
