In truth, yes, we were warned about just how unpredictable the Serie A season was going to be. Gameweek 2 of the Italian league has shown us a glimpse into what promises to be a fascinating season. The scoring and performances were, largely over the top. These inform our FootballCoin Team of the Week.
Strong start to Mourinho’s reign while Juventus crumbles
Jose Mourinho has gone through a lot of clubs over the past decade. Ten years ago he was a UCL and Serie A winner with Inter. Naturally, many expressed doubts about the Portuguese manager being able to live up to the billing in his tenure as AS Roma manager.
So far, so good. Roma secured their second straight win. This time they won 4-0 against newly-promoted Salernitana. Many of the team’s players looked impressive. Gianluca Mancini, Rick Karsdorp, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Jordan Veretout all walk into our Team of the Week.
Juventus has begun its post-Ronaldo history. It’s an uncomfortable transition by the looks of it. The humbling defeat at home to Udinese perfectly reflects the work that Massimiliano Allegri will need to do in order to get the team back on route to the top.
Giroud and Immobile in terrific form
Some doubts were harbored about Olivier Giroud and Ciro Immobile‘s current abilities. If anything, last week’s performances went to prove that Serie A may just be the ideal place for both players.
Giroud scored two goals in Milan’s victory over Cagliari. It’s an important triumph and one that shows that the team continues to grow after last season’s 2nd place finish.
Elsewhere, Ciro Immobile won the Euro 2020 but didn’t exactly prove his goalscoring prowess during the tournament. The Laziali forward remains one of the most dangerous forwards in Serie A, however. Against Spezia, he scored a hat-trick and his admirers believe that there is still plenty to come.
