Everton has officially announced the transfer of Davy Klaassen from Ajax Amsterdam for a sum of around €27million.
Everton proved to be Premier League’s surprise team of last season, often outperforming some of the competition’s top sides. With hopes for an even better showing this time around, Ronald Koeman’s side is looking to improve its squad and hold on to their top talent.
A new addition to the squad will be Holland international Davy Klaassen. The midfielder has passed his medical exam and has agreed to a five-year contract with Everton. Klaasen is part of the group of young players that impressed for Ajax this season as the team made its way to the Europa League final.
The 24-year-old player made his debut for Ajax’s senior squad in 2011. Since then he has made 180 appearances for the club. Klaassen’s resume includes three Eredivisie titles and a runners-up medal for this season’s Europa League. The player has also proven his leadership qualities while acting as team captain for Ajax during the last two seasons.
Klaassen feels confident about the move and believes he has signed to an important European club. “I’ve walked around the training ground and talked with a few people and it feels good. I spoke a few weeks ago with Ronald Koeman about Everton. I wanted to come here and check if this was the right club for me and since I came here I feel so happy. It’s a great club,” the player told Everton’s official website.
The midfielder is Ronald Koeman’s second signing of the summer break. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was announced as a new addition to the squad on Thursday. The Dutch manager was delighted with Klaassen’s transfer and believes the player will add some attacking flair to the team at Goodison Park.
“I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring Davy to Everton,” Koeman said. “He’s a player who is only 24 but has a lot of experience and is a leader on the pitch. He has already captained Ajax for two seasons and that shows you the type of person he is.”
“He is hardworking, likes to press and, of course, will give us more creativity and goals. It is another major signing for Everton Football Club and I am really happy we have been able to complete the deal so early in the summer.”
