Nico Williams, a Basque prodigy
Nico Williams is a product of Atheltic Bilbao’s famous youth academy. Athletic have a semi-official rule back to 1992 through which they attempt to only sign players that were born in the Basque Country or who developed their craft at the club’s academy.
Nico Williams signed to the academy in 2013. His family is of Liberian origin. His brother, Iñaki Williams, took a similar path and also developed as a high-ranking player with Athletic Bilbao.

Nico Williams favors playing as a right-winger. The player, however, can also play on the left-wing, or as a forward. He made his debut for Athletic Bilbao’s senior team on 28 April 2021. He was played as an advanced midfielder on the right flank.
Nico Williams is highly touted and has been scouted by other high-profile teams. It is unlikely though that at the moment, Athletic wound considers parting with the wonderkid.
Although still developing, Williams is already highly praised for his dribbling skills, ball control, pace, and acceleration. The player is still growing in terms of learning to adapt to a tactical setup and larger defensive responsibilities than at the youth level.
