Some football stars burn out in their prime and some players’ careers seem to go on forever. This looks to be the case for Arjen Robben and Iker Casillas, with the veterans having signed extensions on their contracts. Will Gigi Buffon also decide to carry on with his career?
You can’t buy experience, that’s for sure. While some of the biggest clubs in the world are stepping over others’ toes to sign the newest wonderkids, others are taking good care of their teams’ elder statesmen.
Newly (re)crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munchen have decided to extend winger Arjen Robben‘s contract. The former Holland international first arrived at Bayern in 2009 and has won the title seven times and the Champions League on one occasion with the Germans.
The Bundesliga giants will have a new manager in charge of the team for next season, Niko Kovac. It’s understood that Kovac has expressed his desire to retain most of the teams’ older players, with Franck Ribery and Rafinha also set to extend their contracts.
Another of football’s legends, goalkeeper Iker Casillas, has announced he will sign a new contract with Portuguese champions FC Porto. The keeper was instrumental in helping Porto earn their first title since 2013 and it’s been reported that he has even agreed to take a pay cut, to ensure he remains at the club for one more year.
“I am extremely happy to stay here for one more year. It’s amazing to be linked to a fantastic club and city, both of which welcomed me from day one,” Casillas says.
One of Casillas’ classic rivals throughout the years, Gianluigi Buffon, has just announced that he will be departing Juventus at the end of the season. Buffon, who is now 40, has played for Juventus since 2001 and recently guided the team towards a seventh straight Serie A title.
